The LocationTech Tour promotes open source spatial software world wide. Last year the Victoria tour stop was a cheerful pub night with local speakers - this year we are going BIGGER! Join us for a second collaboration with the Victoria GeoGeeks Meetup now expanded to include a day of workshops at the University of Victoria Campus.

LocationTech Tour Presentations

This year the LocationTech Tour starts off with a pub-night at the Sticky Wicket Pub. We will be updating the list of presentations closer to the event, so far we have a couple of great presentations from the recent FOSS4G conference in Korea.
  • Welcome - quick orientation on open standards, data, source and software and uvic geography department
  • PostGIS Feature Frenzy - everything that is good in PostGIS - don't blink!
  • bikes.org - university of victoria open source, open data research project 
  • State of GeoServer - geoserver has had a busy year!
  • MapStory Uncovered - weaving a story with GeoNode and MapLoom

A full day of hands-on-workshops and talks introducing and using open source spatial software. Thanks to the University of Victoria for providing a venue - space may be limited so sign up early! 
 
Morning (Room B215 9:00 am to 1:30 pm)
 
1 hour workshops, bring your own laptop.
  • Welcome - quick orientation on open standards, data, source and software
  • Introduction to GeoServer (9:30 am - 11:00 pm) Learn to load, style, and publish maps and data using GeoServer.
  • Introduction to PostGIS (11:00 am - 12:30 pm) Introduction to PostGIS spatial database. Installation, loading data, configuration, spatial SQL queries are among the topics touched on in this overview. 
Lunch (12:30 pm - 1:30 pm)
Networking and food.
 
Afternoon (1 hour workshops) 
 
1 hour workshops, bring your own laptop.
  • Making Pretty Maps with CartoDB (1:30 pm 2:30 pm) Explore data visualization highlighting Torque.
  • QGIS Introduction (2:30 pm - 3:30 pm) Introduction to QGIS Desktop GIS Software using a local civic dataset.
  • GeoGig Workshop (3:30 pm - 4:30 pm) GeoGig is a Distributed Version Control System (DVCS) specially designed to handle geospatial data.
